By 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the world’s oceans, study says - The Washington Post

'... But that quantity pales in comparison with the amount that the World Economic Forum expects will be floating into the oceans by the middle of the century.

If we keep producing (and failing to properly dispose of) plastics at predicted rates, plastics in the ocean will outweigh fish pound for pound in 2050, the nonprofit foundation said in a report Tuesday.

According to the report, worldwide use of plastic has increased 20-fold in the past 50 years, and it is expected to double again in the next 20 years. By 2050, we’ll be making more than three times as much plastic stuff as we did in 2014.

Google just published a free, three-month course on deep learning

Google wants to teach you deep learning — if you're ready that is. The tech giant has launched a free course explaining the machine learning technique that underpins so many of its services. (Google uses deep learning for everything from speech recognition to automatically sorting your photo collection.) The course is available on for-profit education site Udacity, and is estimated to take about three months to complete at a rate of six hours of work a week. It's not for absolute beginners, but aims to help established engineers and data scientists get to grips with deep learning as well as TensorFlow — the in-house machine learning software that Google open sourced last November.

Brain implant will connect a million neurons with superfast bandwidth

'The Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) – a branch of the U.S. military – has announced a new research and development program known as Neural Engineering System Design (NESD). This aims to create a fully implantable neural interface able to provide unprecedented signal resolution and data-transfer bandwidth between the human brain and the digital world.

The interface would serve as a translator, converting between the electrochemical language used by neurons in the brain and the ones and zeros that constitute the language of information technology. A communications link would be achieved in a biocompatible device no larger than a cubic centimetre. This could lead to breakthrough treatments for a number of brain-related illnesses, as well as providing new insights into possible future upgrades for aspiring transhumanists.'

New algorithms to stop drone crashes. "MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) thinks it has a couple of killer algorithms that could help. One is an algorithm that helps automated drones detect and navigate complicated "forests" full of obstacles; the other is a sophisticated software library of pre-canned flight maneuvers that drones can endlessly string together to pull off the kind of aerodynamic acrobatics for which you'd usually need an Iceman or Maverick."

Football Coaches Are Turning to AI for Help Calling Plays

The application of artificial intelligence to play-calling is already upon us. Last spring, two students at North Carolina State, William Burton and Michael Dickey, built a model to predict whether an NFL team would pass or run, information that would hugely benefit defensive coordinators. Tested against decisions made in a 2014 Cowboys-Jaguars game, the model picked the play type 91.6 percent of the time.

This is test footage and images of the animatronic head built for Edgar Wrights "The World's End". This is a fairly simple head with only eye and jaw movement but has just enough functionality to sell the gag! Used during the fight sequence in the toilets.

Technical Description:
The head has 12 servos, 10 for the eye and brows and 2 for the jaw/jaw slew. Eye mixing and jitter was programmed in my own iPuP-EXT unit, with dual 3 axis control sticks for pupeteering. The head was self contained utilising a magnetic latching battery compartment in the base of the neck, and a magnetic on/off switch buried below the skin for ease of power saving without battery removal.'

Why Spatial Audio Is Such a Big Deal for Google Cardboard | WIRED

'... The high-priced headsets from Oculus, Sony, and HTC pack the processing punch to deliver “spatially oriented” audio experiences that consider direction, distance, and environmental factors when creating the soundtrack. Cardboard, powered by your smartphone, can’t do that yet. But earlier this week, the Cardboard team made it a little easier to give the audio in these apps a bit more realism. As this blog post from Google Cardboard product manager Nathan Martz outlines, the Cardboard software development kit for Android and the Unity game engine now support spatial audio. This platform update paves the way for Google Cardboard to become something more than a gateway drug to true VR.

'... Some scented candles could be as harmful — maybe even worse — than smoking a cigarette.

That's according to Andrew Sledd, M.D., a Missouri pediatrician who specializes in environmental toxicology. Sledd told KFVS-TV that it only takes an hour of burning a candle to produce the same harmful effects as smoking just one cigarette.

He said soot from candles can pose a threat to our respiratory systems. That soot can contain particles of zinc, tin and lead. Because candles don't have filters, which typically remove microparticles, he said those soot particles are released into the room and can penetrate your lungs.

According to the EPA, the amount of soot produced can vary greatly from candle to candle.

I personally don't see anything wrong with delivery drones, in fact, I think it's damn cool. That said, if multiple carriers / companies plan on doing similar tasks, air traffic could become crowded. Will we one day look up and always see a few of these flying over head? That's quite the interesting future...

Researchers Project Digital People into Chairs in Augmented Reality Study | MIT Technology Review

'Nothing beats talking to another person face-to-face, but a group of researchers are considering whether a life-size projection of a person that appears to be sitting across from you in an actual chair might be a close second.

Room2Room, a project from Microsoft Research, does just this: it uses Kinect depth cameras and digital projectors to capture the image of a person in 3-D in one room and project a life-sized version of them in real time onto a piece of furniture in another room, where someone else is actually hanging out, and vice versa. Each person can then see a digital image of the other with the correct perspective, look at them from different viewpoints, and interact with them, the researchers say.'

We started working with a handful of companies that had approached us that wanted to start to experiment with the technology -- not to play Jeopardy!, but to use the underlying technology to start to solve problems. The preponderance of them were in the healthcare field. Industry luminaries like Memorial Sloan-Kettering or MD Anderson in cancer, or in general medicine, the Cleveland Clinic. They all started partnering with us to explore how we could take what was inside the Jeopardy! system and morph it into things that could be used in the healthcare profession. We did that for a couple years, and that gave us the confidence that led to the announcement in 2014 of the commercialization project and Watson Group."

New Study Says Space Elevators Will Be Feasible by 2030 - Futurism

'... Ultimately, the team clarifies that a space elevator would require a super-strong, flexible material that can be used to make the 100,000 km rope that would be necessary to make a true space elevator. It is a material that, currently, we don’t have. But we will. And the scientists assert that such a material will become real before 2030.

Given these developments, the researchers behind the study think that the creation of space elevators will be viable roughly around this same time-frame.

Notably, it is actually the elevator that will make space travel more accessible. In their work, the team asserts that the technology would make commercial and government missions more feasible, and pave the way for the development of space colonies, as we could get material and supplies to space much cheaper using such an elevator.

25 possible adverse reactions to vaccines according to CDC and big pharma http://b4in.org/xV7

As we witness the ever growing agenda for maintaining and increasing immunizations, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) works to create what it calls “lasting, effective immunization delivery systems.” Yet, the CDC also admits – on the same area of its website – that there is a long list of adverse, sometimes deadly, reactions to vaccines.

CDC, big pharma and other vaccine proponents have pushed a mandatory vaccination agenda by such means as the linking of vaccination requirements to public school admission. But in this race to push pharmaceuticals, the risk of side effects is often downplayed and the alternative, natural means for preventing disease left unacknowledged. Many of these vaccinations are ineffective or quickly lose effectiveness, while putting health – and even lives – at risk.

Warning labels tell the real story: Vaccines deliver dangerous side effects

You need not look very far to learn about the potential for adverse reactions from vaccines. In fact, the same entities behind the push for mandatory vaccination programs also display a frighteningly long list of potentially adverse reactions, many of them serious. “Any vaccine can have side effects,” states the CDC website. What isn’t highlighted is that in many cases, those side effects are expected as often as one out of every two individuals.

With information gleaned directly from the CDC website and the labels of the pharmaceuticals themselves, here is a brief look at just 25 of the hundreds of potentially dangerous reactions documented for specific vaccines:

1. Permanent brain damage: Diphtheria, Tetanus and acellular Pertussis (DTaP); Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR); Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Varicella (MMRV); Varicella (Chickenpox)

2. Moderate or long-term seizures: DTaP, Influenza (inactivated), MMR, MMRV, Varicella (Chickenpox)

3. Severe nervous system reaction: Yellow Fever

4. Coma or lowered consciousness: DTaP, MMR, MMRV

5. Deafness: MMR, MMRV

6. Intussusception (bowel blockage requiring hospitalization): Rotavirus

As of June 2015, the radiation in the Pacific Ocean reached the US West Coast; the seafood you’ve been eating from the Pacific ocean is loaded with Cesium-137 and Strontium-90. Both radioactive. Strontium-90 mimics calcium. Both radioactive strontium and cesium may end up getting deposited in human bones, where the radiation wreaks havoc on bone marrow, causing bone cancers and blood cancers like Leukemia.

Gut Bacteria Linked to the Development of Type 2 Diabetes http://b4in.org/uWD

The intestinal environment plays a larger role in bodily function and health than just digesting food. Immunity begins in the gut and any decreases in health-promoting microbes can negatively impact the body’s immune system and therefore, the body’s ability to ward off disease.

But research now shows that gut bacteria can also provide clues as to whether or not type 2 diabetes is present. In fact, changes in intestinal microbes are often detected before other symptoms of type 2 diabetes have even emerged.

Unhealthy gut microbes linked to the development of diabetes

According to the World Health Organization and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 285 million people worldwide and about 21 million in the United States (alone) suffer from type 2 diabetes. U.S. numbers have steadily climbed in recent years to 9.3 percent of the population, a three-fold increase in the last 30 years.

Actor Brazil's Globo shoots unidentified object

The actor Rodrigo Andrade posted a video that impresses many. In the pictures, it appears on a particular flight between Rio de Janeiro and Campinas, along with two other people, discussing on a supposed UFO (Unidentified Flying Object) accompanying their aircraft.

. "Hi gang, thought a lot whether to publish this video or not Anyway, I decided to publish ... We were flying three - me, the pilot and co-pilot - when an unidentified object appeared and followed our aircraft for about 25 minutes, "he said on the video that was recorded in 2013.

"There seems to be a star, it seems one thing we are not identifying. I spoke with Rio control and he told me that there is no traffic in this area. It's weird, but a beautiful phenomenon," says the pilot of the aircraft, identified as Thaddeus .

Please remember that most UFO sighting can be explained as something natural or man-made.

Paging Dr. Robot: The Coming AI Health Care Boom

'More than six billion dollars: That’s how much health care providers and consumers will be spending every year on artificial intelligence tools by 2021—a tenfold increase from today—according to a new report from research firm Frost & Sullivan. (Specifically, it will be a growth from $633.8 million in 2014 to $6,662.2 million in 2021.)

AI will be everywhere—from diagnosing cancer to providing weight-loss coaching, says Venkat Rajan, who has the great title of global director for the company's Visionary Healthcare Program. "Prior to 2015, most of what was happening was sort of academic: pilot programs, exploratory, proof of concept-type stuff," he says. "And now you're actually seeing commercial usage."

AI's ability to sort through scads of information, and remember everything it has ever seen, could enable a digital (and congenial) version of Dr. House, the brilliant diagnostician from the eponymous TV show, says Rajan. "At first, it's a complete mystery, it could be one of ten different things," he says, about the process in the show, and real life, called differential diagnosis. "And then he's able to sort through various issues, you know, illuminate certain factors on why it's not one of these other conditions, and he's able to pull something from memory that figures out ultimately what it is, and they can provide the appropriate treatmen'

'Stores stock a variety of deodorants and antiperspirants, but if you’re concerned about the health or environmental effects of using such products, there are alternatives. While some people are worried about common deodorant chemicals like parabens, formaldehyde and triclosan, most concerns focus on aluminum, the ingredient in antiperspirant that blocks pores and fights wetness. Aluminum is rumored to be linked to breast cancer and other diseases; however, the National Cancer Institute says this research is inconclusive. In addition to these potential health risks, aluminum mining is also destructive and polluting. If you’re thinking twice putting such ingredients on your body, check out these natural deodorant alternatives.'

How friendly is your AI?

Originally shared by Wayne Radinsky

How friendly is your AI? It depends on the rewards. "To study such scenarios, we modified DeepMind’s framework to allow two agents to share an environment and learn to either compete or collaborate. In our experiments we focused on the behaviour of the agents in well-known Pong game environment."

"In the competitive mode, the two agents were rewarded for putting the ball past the opponent. As we let the agents play against each other, both of them got better and better with time. Eventually the agents learned to ward off even difficult fast-flying shots and send the ball back with speed."

"In the collaborative game mode both agents were penalized (received negative rewards) whenever the ball went out of play. These were the only rewards the agents received. Starting from a random behaviour, agents quickly learned that the best way to avoid losing the ball is to never launch the ball in the first place."

For example, in the context of Pandora, two actions could be "List Stations" and "Select Station" and start playback.

LG to unveil 18-inch OLED display that ‘can be rolled up like a newspaper’ | ExtremeTech

'LG, Samsung, Sony, and other display manufacturers have unveiled flexible screens before, but this concept is more advanced, and frankly, stunning. The company is showing off at CES 2016 an 18-inch rollable display that can be rolled up like a newspaper. What’s interesting about this is the sheer size of the panel, if you can call it such; most manufacturers have shown off bendable displays at various smaller sizes in the past, and of course curved (but fixed) HDTVs have been in stores for several years now.'

How Google's Project Tango will change your life

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/CBirho )

Project Tango is a Google platform for giving phones and tablets a sense of space.

Right now, your phone can't do this. By this time next year, it probably will.

I love moments like these -- a fundamental technology is poised to change what people do every day and how they do it, yet the general public remains ignorant of what's coming.

That ignorance is about to be shattered. CES will usher in a new awareness about Project Tango. I'll detail below what's going to happen this week. But first, let's understand Tango.

"The contest hopes to facilitate the launch of a series of apps that will allow people to track the effects of various products (including cosmetics) on their face -- ones that quickly allow them to understand the impact on perception using impartial opinion of deep-learned algorithms." "People may not care about how to extend their lifespans, but they definitely care about the way they look."

The contest is called beauty.ai.

What We Expect to See in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence in 2016 | MIT Technology Review

What We Expect to See in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence in 2016 | MIT Technology Review

'China’s robot revolution

The world’s largest economy has embarked on an audacious effort to fill its factories with advanced manufacturing robots. The government of China hopes this will help the country retain its vast manufacturing industry as workers’ wages rise, and manufacturing becomes more efficient and technologically advanced around the world (see “China Wants to Replace Millions of Workers with Robots”). The project will require robots that are significantly more advanced and cost-efficient, and the economic and technological ripples could be felt around the world.
...

Smarter learning

Robots have always been very effective for precise, repetitive work, but for the most part they’re also dumb as rocks. This is why robots are traditionally used only in carefully designed settings. It also explains why they cannot easily adapt to a new task, and cannot cope with an unfamiliar or uncertain situation. Things are changing, however, thanks to new techniques and algorithms that are enabling robots to learn much more quickly and effectively.
...

Knowledge sharing

Another trend to look out for this year is robots sharing the knowledge they have acquired with other robots. This could accelerate the learning process, instantly allowing a robot to benefit from the efforts of others (see “Robots Quickly Teach Each Other to Grasp New Objects”). What’s more, thanks to clever approaches for adapting information to different systems, even two completely different robots could teach each other how to recognize a particular object or perform a new task (see “Robots Can Now Teach Each Other New Tricks”).
...

Robots get more personal

Several “personal” robots are set to debut this year, and it will be interesting to see how well they are received. With hardware becoming cheaper and software becoming more capable, it isn’t hard to see why some believe the time is right for robotic home companions and helpers (see “Personal Robots: Artificial Friends with Limited Benefits”).
...

Droning on

2016 seems likely to be the year that autonomous drones finally, well, take off. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration released regulations for registering drones at the end of 2015, and it is testing technology that could help automate air traffic control for automated vehicles (see “FAA Will Test Drones’ Ability to Steer Themselves Out of Trouble”).

How a Microwave Oven Works - YouTube

Bill details how a microwave oven heats food. He describes how the microwave vacuum tube, called a magnetron, generates radio frequencies that cause the water in food to rotate back and forth. He shows the standing wave inside the oven, and notes how you can measure the wavelength with melted cheese. He concludes by describing how a magnetron generates radio waves. You can learn more about the microwave oven from the EngineerGuy team's new book Eight Amazing Engineering Stories http://www.engineerguy.com/elements

"The top 6 mobile apps and 8 of the top 9 are owned by Facebook and Google.

"The top 6 mobile apps and 8 of the top 9 are owned by Facebook and Google. 10 of the top 12 mobile apps are owned by Apple, Facebook, and Google. There isn't a single 'startup' on that list and the youngest company on that list is Snapchat which is now over four years old."

"We are now well into a consolidation phase where the strong are getting stronger and it is harder than ever to build a large consumer user base. It is reminiscent of the late 80s/early 90s after Windows emerged as the dominant desktop environment and Microsoft started to use that dominant market position to move up the stack and take share in all of the important application categories."
