Already, drones are able to fly themselves independently so they can stay airborne if they lose touch with human pilots. Soon they may be able to make their own tactical decisions. At Georgia Tech in the United States this summer, researchers programmed swarms of light drones to fight their own aerial dogfights. The U.S. military is trying out similar products.

That means one operator could command many, many more drones – or that they might not need direct supervision at all.

Even more important than what is happening in robotics may be the wider developments in artificial intelligence. That won’t make warfare necessarily more deadly – a bomb dropped from a drone is not in itself less lethal than one from a manned aircraft. While it’s possible that greater accuracy might reduce casualties, some analysts fear that the changes brought by new unmanned systems might themselves fuel new conflicts.

"Just because we don't know quite what will go wrong doesn't mean we shouldn't think about it. That's the basic idea of safety engineering: You think hard about what might go wrong to prevent it from happening. Lots of people conflate safety engineering with alarmism. But when the leaders of the Apollo program carefully thought through everything that could go wrong when you sent a rocket with astronauts to the moon, they weren't being alarmist. They were doing precisely what ultimately led to the success of the mission. This is how we should think about AI."

So says Max Tegmark, an MIT physics professor who wrote a book, "Life 3.0: Being Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence," in which he first "explains how today's AI research will likely lead to the creation of a superintelligent AI, then goes further to explore the possible futures that could result from this creation."

Now, for context, this survey was being done as part of a Westworld promotion. And there's a large gap between what you see on Westworld and what current or near-term sex robots are like.
It would be interesting to see a more nuanced study:
* for a longer-term future view of fully conscious, sentient robots,
* for advanced humanoid robots capable of meaningful dialogue and some level of simulated relationship
* for robots not much more advanced than what we have today

As well as to what level emotional involvement sways answers.

"The graphic appears to say that we will go from 1 million grounds and maintenance workers in the US to only 50,000 in 10 to 20 years, because robots will take over those jobs. How many robots are currently operational in those jobs? ZERO. How many realistic demonstrations have there been of robots working in this arena? ZERO. Similar stories apply to all the other job categories in this diagram where it is suggested that there will be massive disruptions of 90%, and even as much as 97%, in jobs that currently require physical presence at some particular job site."

If you’re still riding that high from seeing the recent total solar eclipse and you want to keep the party going, now’s your chance to see another of the night sky’s wonders: an aurora. That said, a totally full Moon is going to try and wreck the party.

NASA announced that two powerful flares were just emitted on the surface of the Sun, casting coronal mass ejections in our direction. Over the course of the next couple of days, this should generate aurora activity in the sky outside the regular viewing areas. In other words, if you normally don’t see the Northern Lights where you live, you might want to spend a few hours outside tonight and tomorrow. Look up, you might see something.

Yesterday, the Sun released the most powerful solar flare recorded since 2008.

Cleverly-Designed Mirrored Tableware Tricks You into Eating Less

Nutritionists claim that portion size control is one of the keys to losing weight and staying in shape. Using smaller dishes is probably the most popular way to control the size of your meals, but a couple of London-based art students may have come up with an even more effective one – using mirrors to make tableware look twice as full.

Saki Maruyama and Daniel Coppen, collectively known as Studio Playfool, have come up with an ingenious tableware design that relies on mirrors to trick your eyes into seeing more food than is actually available. Named Half/Full, their recently unveiled tableware set was apparently inspired by the threat of future food shortages on a global scale, and is therefore designed to “future proof appetites”.

An Incredibly Fast And Deadly Super Bug Is Spreading In China: “Substantial Threat To Human Health”

There is a substantial threat to human health in China, and it could become a global epidemic if not contained. As an antibiotic resistant super bug is making its way across the country and the new deadly illness spreads, the mainstream media remains tightlipped about this potential epidemic.

Infowars’ editor note reads:

We’re horrified to learn that we’re the first international news outlet to bring massive attention to this story. This superbug was first revealed in The Lancet, a peer-reviewed medical journal. Until now, this story went underreported in the media, with only a handful of regional outlets providing limited coverage.

The Lancet has titled their article: A fatal outbreak of ST11 carbapenem-resistant hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae in a Chinese hospital: a molecular epidemiological study. It bears to reason that this may be something that the general public should be concerned about, and the silence by mainstream media is telling.

Scientists in Hangzhou, China have discovered a new strain of antibiotic-resistant pneumonia which spreads incredibly fast. They completed a study following a 2016 outbreak in a hospital ICU (intensive care unit) which led to the deaths of five patients ranging in age from 53 to 73.

Faced with rising labor costs, China is making a strong move to establish itself as the world's leading manufacturer of robots.

The country is already the world's largest buyer of industrial robots, but it's lagged behind Japan, its perennial Asian market rival, when it comes to technology development.

There are big signs that's changing rapidly. According to a report from the International Federation of Robotics (IFR), China will triple its sales of robots by 2018. By 2019, the IFR predicts that more than 1.4 million new industrial robots will be installed in factories around the world, and China will account for 40 percent of global robotics sales.
