Robots will cut 25% of US jobs in 4 years, transform workforce – report http://b4in.org/bM3z

The encroachment of self-help kiosks and grocery store scanners has led doomsayers to suggest automation threatens the workforce of the future. A new report argues it will create new business sectors and new jobs as well.

By studying large companies in various industries, from Delta Airlines Inc. to Whole Foods Market Inc., as well as many startups, analysts have forecast that automation will erase 22.7 million jobs by 2025, or 16 percent of today’s total.

The prediction comes in a report titled “The Future of Jobs, 2025: Working Side-By-Side with Robots,” published by Forrester Research this week. The study’s findings were drawn from government employment data, and interviews with businesses and academics.

Automation in daily life is already prevalent and expanding beyond the grocery store scanner. Robots are now delivering room service to guests in the Aloft hotel in San Francisco, and self-service kiosks filling orders at delis rather than humans.

Lowe’s hardware is testing Oshbot, a robotic sales assistant that can answer questions, and show customers a floorplan of the store or lead them directly to products they seek.

Robots are using wikiHow to figure out how to cook us breakfast

If there’s anything you’ve ever needed to know how to do, from building a birdhouse to tying a bowtie to dressing like a “pastel goth,” you’ve probably ended up on wikiHow. Now, robots are using the user-generated advice site to learn how to do all sorts of tasks for us—including making pancakes and pizza.

RoboHow, a group of robotics researchers from multiple European universities, are trying to teach robots how to cook, among other things, MIT Technology Review reported. The robots learn, like most budding cooks these days, through a combination of being shown how to make something by a knowledgable human, and then parsing information from how-to websites and videos, just to make sure.

An algorithm that can guess with up to 92 per cent accuracy whether a human driver will make a lane change (at least in a driving simulator) has been developed. The researchers anticipated it being the beginning of a set of algorithms that predict a lot of behavior of human drivers, and autonomous cars may adopt some behaviors themselves so human drivers can sense what they're about to do.

"Gill Pratt, program director for robotics research at the United States Defence Department's Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) makes a good argument that we're about to have a Cambrian moment in robotics and artificial intelligence, as devices become able to do anything people can do, including thinking."

"Even five years ago, algorithms for computer vision could barely recognise simple objects, such as a ball or a square block, especially in realistic environments. Now, such algorithms can easily distinguish different breeds of dogs, and can recognise human faces as well as or better than real people can. [...] Last month Google announced that it could translate text from more than 20 foreign languages just from photos – say, from a menu or handwritten note. Earlier this year, Google's deep learning group demonstrated that an algorithm could learn to play all of the Atari video games of the  '80s with the same skill as human experts – simply by watching and learning."

Eh, well, it's not all the games. If I recall correctly, they were able to get about 40 games but there were still 6 games the AI still couldn't learn. Not that it matters with respect to the point they are trying to make here.

The Transwheel Drone is a great idea! According to the Daily Mail:

Transwheel drones use a single self-balancing wheel and a robotic arm to pick up and carry packages;
The electric robots would work alone for small deliveries or operate together as a swarm to carry larger loads;
They would use GPS to help them navigate and facial recognition to confirm the identity of a recipient; and
Designers say the robots could allow customers to receive deliveries at times that are convenient to them.

These berries resemble the eyes of old-fashioned china dolls, hence the common name. Another common name of this species is White Baneberry, which refers to the appearance of the berries and their toxic nature to humans.

Seven Parts of the Human Body and How They Benefit from Cannabis http://b4in.org/sSN7

Research institutions around the world are beginning to discover how the human body can benefit from cannabis. As a result medical marijuana and hemp foods are becoming popular preventative supplements and are used in treatment of various illnesses.

In the US, there are various hemp-based nutritional supplements, such as hemp oil and shelled hempseed, available following the FDA’s approval of CBD cannabinoids in 2004 (source: Scientific American) in response to the discovery that our own body produces compounds very similar to that of CBDs found in cannabis. Perhaps within the near future, the beneficial properties of cannabis will further build the case for the legalization of industrial hemp and marijuana throughout the world.

What Is Lactobacillus Gasseri And It’s Health Benefits? http://b4in.info/toU7

Are probiotics really that good for you? Is yogurt the best source of probiotics? I regularly hear these and many other questions about probiotics. Probiotics is a subject that is pretty straightforward, but confusion still persists regarding these beneficial microbes. The fact that there are so many different types of probiotic strains doesn’t help. Let’s start by discussing Lactobacillus gasseri, one of the beneficial microorganisms that assist with digestive health and against harmful organisms.

The Benefits of Probiotics

There are many benefits of probiotics you probably already know, and some that may surprise you. Your digestives system depends on microorganisms called “probiotics” to work properly. [1] Probiotic bacteria helps the body get the nutrients it needs, stimulates your immune system, and protects your intestines from harmful toxins and organisms. [2] When you have a healthy balance of bacteria in your system, metabolism, digestion, and your natural detoxification process all run smoothly. The cardiovascular system, bones, blood sugar, and mental health are also connected to probiotic status.

A study has shown that people who have strong cognitive skills spend less time on their devices than those with less brain power.

Those who think in an analytical way also pick up their phone less frequently because they remember things or are able to work problems out for themselves.

The study said that smartphones were making people lazier than ever as we saw them as an ‘extension of our mind’.

Googling information we don’t know is replacing natural curiosity - a trend that will only get worse in the future.

The study was carried out by researchers at the University of Waterloo in Ontario and involved studying 660 people.

The findings showed a clear link between less time spent on the phone and stronger cognitive skills and greater willingness to think in an analytical way.

Steven Vaughan-Nichols has put together an article covering one option for people that aren't comfortable with Windows 10 on their computer. Linux.
His example choice of Linux Mint is a solid one. I'd also add Debian or OpenSUSE with KDE as good options for Windows XP/7 users to upgrade to.

Mycroft looks interesting and the project's creators are correct that having an Open platform will allow for a more versatile, compatible product in an industry still clinging to the lock-in model.
The fact that you can choose which automation systems you want to use will make for a more user focused system.

If You Thought You Were Safe From Earthquakes, Then This New Report Has Some Stunning News http://b4in.info/dknV

Do you live in an earthquake danger zone? If you think all of those not living along the West Coast are basically safe, then you may be shocked by a new USGS study.

Approximately half of all Americans are at risk from “damaging earthquakes,” according to the U.S. Geological Survey report.

Among the lower 48, a total of 143 million Americans live in areas that could experience the “big one.” Among that number, a full 28 million live in places with “high potential” for ground shaking and 57 million live in “moderate” hazard zones.

The new USGS study is indicative of a surge in the number of Americans blissfully unaware that they would be affected by an earthquake. A previous report stated that a much lower number — 75 million people in 39 states — were exposed to earthquake risk.

Earthquake study co-author Mark Peterson said the uptick in the number of Americans exposed to earthquakes stems from an increase in population in high-risk areas like California and the addition of new earthquake zones, The Washington Post reported.

New Study: Pesticides a “Major Cause” of Infertility, Male Erectile Dysfunction http://b4in.org/jRSR

Male fertility is declining, and for years researchers have been trying to figure out why. The numbers may seem shocking, but between 60-80 million couples around the world are having a difficult time conceiving, and there is a likely culprit, especially considering evidence arising from the latest study published at Science Direct.

Titled, “Potential pathways of pesticide action on erectile function – A contributory factor in male infertility,” the study shows that along with heavy metals, radioactivity, and poisonous fumes of organic chemicals, pesticides are largely contributing to erectile dysfunction and the downfall of male fertility. Of course there are numerous “psychological, physiological, pathological, social, environmental, and nutritional factors (plus others), at play.

It is estimated in some studies that as much as 52% of men over 40 are suffering from erectile dysfunction. How is this possible when in times past such a phenomenon was rare? The numbers of birth defects we are observing as a planet are also on the rise. Is this any surprise, though, when Syngenta covers up how their pesticide, Atrazine, was causing frogs to change genders and have serious fertility issues? Or when Monsanto lies about the true effects of their herbicide, glyphosate, on fertility?

To whit, in the April 16 issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences:

“…University of California, Berkeley, developmental endocrinologist Tyrone B. Hayes, associate professor of integrative biology, and his colleagues report that Atrazine at levels often found in the environment demasculinizes tadpoles and turns them into hermaphrodites – creatures with both male and female sexual characteristics. The herbicide also lowers levels of the male hormone testosterone in sexually mature male frogs by a factor of 10, to levels lower than those in normal female frogs.”

Humans won’t survive next mass extinction – scientists http://b4in.org/rRsE

Despite populating vast swaths of the planet, and appropriating large amounts natural resources in order to survive, human beings are no more likely to survive a mass extinction event than rare or endangered species, scientists say.

A team from the University of Leeds examining the effects of mass extinctions found that widespread species, like humans, are just as likely to become extinct as less populous ones.

This contrasts with regular circumstances, where a populous species is more likely to survive than a rare or endangered one.

The team of scientists examined the fossil records of vertebrates from the Triassic and Jurassic periods – 252 to 145 million years ago. During this period a mass extinction thought to have been caused by a volcanic eruption wiped out almost 80 percent of all living species and gave rise to the dinosaurs.

Scientists Alex Dunhill and Matthew Wills from the university looked at the distribution of species and the ways they changed during the time periods. They then compared their results with the changes in overall biodiversity and gathered information on the extinction risk of species.

They found that the extinction of many groups of crocodile-like animals led to the rise of the dinosaurs.

Build a Brain

Artificial intelligence is growing more intelligent every year, but we’ve never given our machines consciousness. People once thought that if you made a computer complicated enough it would just sort of ‘wake up’ on its own. But that hasn’t panned out (so far as anyone knows). Apparently, the vital spark has to be deliberately designed into the machine. And so the race is on to figure out what exactly consciousness is and how to build it.

Tip for Organising Google Photos

Tip for Organising Google Photos

You can't organise your main photo stream which is just a bottomless bucket that stores your photos in the order you take them or upload them

But Google has given us Album tagging until we get more tools

Google photo albums are just tags.
The photos don't actually go anywhere (like 'into' an album), they are just tagged with the name to make them easier to find again

The great thing is you can add many album tags to the same photo/s

If you had a photo of your Mum in Rome you can add album tags for 'Mum' 'Rome' 'Europe' 'Holidays' '2013' and the same photo will appear in all 5 albums and not just one

Of course you can add album tags to whole groups of photos at a time not just one.

You can even open an existing album (Europe) and add album tags to groups of photos in that album (Germany, Cyprus, Uncle Arthur)

That's why you shouldn't delete any photos from your main photo stream

Hopefully G will give us a better method of adding/editing/removing album tags in the near future

"Update May 2015: you can now import videos from Google Photos to YouTube, both regular videos and automatic "Creations", whether you have a Google+ profile or not. The screen shots and links have been updated to reflect that change.

Uploading video to Google Photos is easy, especially using the Auto Backup option on your mobile device or desktop computer. You can even use Google Photos to combine images and video clips into your own movie creation. But Google Photos doesn't offer all the video editing, management and promotional tools you can find on YouTube.

The solution?

Nutritionists Slam Coca-cola Funded Scientists Over Deceptive Soda Message http://b4in.info/dkgC

Coca-Cola is funding influential scientists pushing a message that diminishes the role of junk food and sweetened beverages in the obesity crisis—a partnership that has drawn the ire of nutritional experts since it was highlighted earlier this week.

The Global Energy Balance Network (GEBN) on Monday released a promotional video claiming that there is “no compelling evidence” that soft drinks or fast food contribute to Americans’ declining health, and that consumers should worry more about exercising than cutting calories to lose weight. In turn, media outlets swiftly highlighted that the GEBN lists the world’s largest producer of sugary sodas as one of its major financial backers.

That’s an association that, as nutrition professor Barry Popkin told the Guardian on Tuesday, exposes the GEBN as “merchants of doubt” akin to the scientists-for-hire who deny the harmful effects of tobacco.

Mist-ic showerhead and 6 other ways California copes with drought http://b4in.org/jRYT

A revolutionary showerhead that uses 70 percent less water has already raised $1.3 million on Kickstarter. Record drought affecting the US West Coast has inspired some intriguing solutions to the water shortage.

1. The Nebia showerhead
The Nebia system, backed by the likes of Apple CEO Tim Cook, has raised more than fifteen times the $100,000 it set out to collect via a campaign on Kickstarter.

“Nebia atomizes water into millions of tiny droplets with 10 times more surface area than your regular shower,” the California-based company says. “With Nebia, more water comes into contact with your body, leaving your skin clean and hydrated all while using less water than a typical household showerhead.”

In the fourth year of a record drought, California and other areas along the US West Coast are seeking new ways, both basic and advanced, to save the world’s most valuable resource.

2. Toilet to tap

Across California, water managers and environmentalists in particular are pushing systems that convert sewage effluent to heavily-treated, purified drinking water. Proponents of potable water reuse say that the system could recycle the hundreds of billions of gallons of treated sewage, currently directed into the Pacific Ocean, into drinking water.

In Orange County, a treatment plant built in 2008 is expanding water production from 70 million to 100 million gallons per day, enough for 850,000 people per year, according to Orange County Water District general manager Mike Markus. That expansion will cost $140 million, much cheaper than importing water from northern California or desalination of ocean water, Markus said.

3. Tapping the ocean

By doing this every day you will begin to feel euphoria. This is because the ice cube will cause for endorphin to be released in your blood. But, there are many more benefits from using this technique. For example:

• Sleep improvement;
• Better digestion;
• No more frequent colds;
• Less joint pain, toothaches and headaches;
• Breathing improvement and better cardiovascular system;
• No more degenerative spine changes and management of neurological disorders;
• Help with sexually transmitted and gastrointestinal infections;
• No thyroid gland disorders;
• No hypotension, hypertension and arthritis;
• No asthma;
• Help with malnutrition or obesity;
• No Cellulite;
• Better menstruation and help with impotence, infertility, endocrine glands and frigidity;
• No insomnia, chronic fatigue, depression, stress and management of psycho-emotional disorders;

This method helps the body to return its balance, so technically it is not a cure, but a rejuvenation method. Simply put, your body gets higher on life.

However, the method may show contraindications in cases of schizophrenia, epilepsy, pacemakers, and during pregnancy.
