Glaciers + Bonus Ice Cap

Glaciers + Bonus Ice Cap

I usually post images from Earth observation satellites (https://goo.gl/REmnUX) in my Space/Space Technology collection, but I figured that some of my followers of this Climate Change / Earth collection here might enjoy the view of a few glaciers and an ice cap.

If you like those images, processed from data taken by the Landsat (https://goo.gl/whVRTQ) and Sentinel (https://goo.gl/P2bRoG) satellites, you should follow my Space/Space Technology collection (https://goo.gl/5KP0wx) as well as my Flickr (https://www.flickr.com/photos/pierre_markuse/), with even more images.

I also occasionally tweet about topics relevant to this collection, so in case you just can't get enough you can follow me on Twitter here:

View of the Bahamas from the Cupola aboard the ISS

View of the Bahamas from the Cupola aboard the ISS

In this image you can see a colorful view of the Bahamas from Space, taken by NASA astronaut Scott Kelly (https://goo.gl/Ub9jKX) from aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

The Cupola with its seven windows was built by ESA (https://goo.gl/AZKxDy). The circular 80 centimeters (31 inches) window is the largest ever used in space. More information here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cupola_(ISS_module)

Year in Space

Scott Kelly is currently on a one-year mission in space, joined by Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko (https://goo.gl/rGe08R). By extending the mission time from the usual six months to one year the researchers hope to better understand how the human body reacts and adapts to long-duration spaceflight. More on that here:

Scott Kelly frequently posts pictures from space on his Twitter, follow him here: https://twitter.com/StationCDRKelly

If you are interested in space images you should take a look at the
Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth website. It allows you to search and browse images taken from the ISS and other missions and you cannot only download JPG images but also the digital raw files if you are interested in editing them yourself. You can find the website here:

Views Launch Announcement

Views Launch Announcement
By publishing your photos on Views (g.co/views), you can help people explore the world, whether they’re planning their next vacation, scouting out their next hiking trail, or just looking for a great neighborhood park.

Starting today, photos with locations that have been shared publicly from your Google+ account will appear in Views (g.co/views) in addition to your photo spheres. Some photos may also appear on Google Maps, making the map more useful and comprehensive for everyone. You can also go to Views and directly upload or import new photos to expand your collection.

If you’re a photographer with a nice portfolio, Views and Maps give your photos new life because they’ll be seen by anyone interested in the places your photographed, such as travelers or residents. One of my favorite professional photographers is Colby Brown who explores the world and leads photography expeditions. His Views profile (http://goo.gl/3ZtDV6) shows all his favorite spots based on the photos he’s shared in his Google+ posts. This really makes me want to plan a trip to Iceland!

If you’re an environmental or cultural non-profit, a travel destination, or anyone whose mission is to protect or celebrate a place, Views helps you bring your location to life for Google Maps users. For example, since I used to live in Hawaii, I’m closely following the Polynesian Voyaging Society as they sail around the world using traditional voyaging canoes and navigating without any modern equipment. Their Hōkūleʻa Worldwide Voyage has been sharing photos and photo spheres from sea and from the remote Pacific islands they visit. You can follow their multi-year expedition on their Views profile (http://goo.gl/gDPUqH).

Finally, if you’re like me, then the photos you want to share are a mix of both travels and of subjects you find interesting in your everyday life, from the old tree in your neighborhood park to the cafe down the street. You can see my Views profile here: http://goo.gl/061Ui2

We hope you enjoy publishing your photos and exploring Views! g.co/views

Which camera: Sony Cybershot DSC HX400V or Sony Cybershot DSC HX60?

Which camera: Sony Cybershot DSC HX400V or Sony Cybershot DSC HX60?

The HX400V is slightly better (although same pixels and processor) but the HX60 is much more portable..

Not sure how better the HV400V is in practice, the main differences are:
-> Aperture: 2.8 vs. 3.5.
-> Focal length: f=4.3-215 mm vs. f=4.3-129 mm
-> Minimum focus: 1 cm - Infinity (W), 2.4 m - Infinity (T) vs. 5 cm - Infinity (W), 2 m - Infinity (T)
-> GPS vs no GPS
-> no 3D vs 3D
-> Optical Zoom: 50 vs. 30
-> ZEISS Vario Sonnar T* Lens vs. Sony G Lens.
-> viewfinder vs no viewfinder
-> Price difference 30 pounds.

Do the specs of the HX400V make it much superior to the HX60? Specially in picture quality? Or is it still better to have a more portable camera because the difference is almost imperceptible?

"Reflecting Pool"
Kure Beach, NC

The milky white ocean swirls into a little pool reflecting the light from the stars above.

I just got back from a wonderful trip up the East coast. What a trip indeed. A great group of folks joined us in Nags Head for the Mountains To Sea Workshops OBX Workshop with Athena Carey  as guest instructor. Tommy White and I had a blast showing everyone some of our favorite spots. In the coming weeks you'll definitely get a glimpse of some highlights from the workshop.

This was captured at Kure Beach on the way back South and I couldn't have asked for better conditions. Fast moving clouds allowed for a some amazing sunset and sunrises and clearing on queue for some star gazing.

These rocks are fairly unique on the East Coast and I plan to get back any chance I get.

Hope you enjoy and feel free to share!
Have a great weekend everyone.

Awesome shots.

Wow. Photographer takes pictures from the exact place as famous photos, then superimposes the historical details into the photos.

Photographer Seth Taras made a series of pictures for a History Channel ad campaign.

I've seen this kind of thing before, but never this well done.
