McAfee says Kurzweil is right about the upside of technology, but there are worrying trends: labor force participation is at a 30-year low, returns to capital have been increasing while returns to labor have been decreasing, and the middle class has been hallowing out. Charles Derber chimes in and says, the increase of wealth inequality and large numbers of people being marginalized has nothing to do with technology but is the result of political policies. Sarah Jaffe chimes in to say the jobs of the past were "good jobs" because of labor organizers and political activism. There are plenty of commercial incentives to fuel huge investments in sentiment analysis and other efforts to understand who we are on a powerful, emotional level.
