"These new robots are like the affordable compliant offspring of a PR2 and Motoman’s SDA series robots. Only these robots are safe for working together with humans and won’t break the bank. We will also be seeing combinations of robots where a base from one company, ie. Fetch or Adept is used with an arm from another, ie. Kuka or Universal."

Scientists discover robust evidence that chronic fatigue syndrome is a biological illness

"We now have evidence confirming what millions of people with this disease already know, that ME/CFS isn't psychological," states lead author Mady Hornig, MD, director of translational research at the Center for Infection and Immunity and associate professor of Epidemiology at Columbia's Mailman School. "Our results should accelerate the process of establishing the diagnosis after individuals first fall ill as well as discovery of new treatment strategies focusing on these early blood markers."

Features it needs imo:
1. sync between OS in the same computer like Dropbox does.
2.  select existing folder if re-installed, without having to download all the content again.
3. edit pdf without the need to download to device.

These are all existing features in Dropbox, so if Google wants us to switch, that's the minimum it needs to offer. Plus some further integration between Google Music, Google Books, Google Movie,  Youtube, Google Plus and GDrive would be nice.

A few weeks ago I posted a link to the first part of this article and here is the second half (first half here: goo.gl/A8V5tF).
In its entirety the article discusses artificial intelligence.
It focuses on the different levels of artificial intelligence, ANI (which we have), AGI (human level), and ASI (human++), and what their consequences might be. What problems can we solve with AGI, what challenges and dangers are there and how probable is ASI?
Both halfs are very long, but in my opinion worth a read. No-matter when AGI is created, it is an important topic to know about (unless it is never created).

Yet More Scientists Blame Fluoride for Underactive Thyroid Issues, Depression, Weight Gain, and More http://b4in.org/hGD4

new study out of the UK shows once again just how dangerous water fluoridation is.

This time, a look at 98 percent of GP practices found that high rates of underactive thyroid were 30 percent more likely to show up in areas with, surprise surprise, the greatest degree of water fluoridation.

Via The Telegraph:

…new research from the University of Kent suggests that there is a spike in the number of cases of underactive thyroid in high fluoride areas such as the West Midlands and the North East of England…

It could mean that up to 15,000 people are suffering needlessly from thyroid problems which can cause depression, weight gain, fatigue and aching muscles.

And that, of course, is just the number of people in those areas studied.

Obviously, this is a dangerous and underestimated practice.

If weight gain and depression fit the bill, it might help to explain why the United States – the most fluoridated nation on the planet – is also the world’s most obese as well as the world’s most medicated country, with anti-depressants prescribed more than any other drug. Of course, there are many other factors at play as well.

Underactive thyroid, or hypothyroidism, is a condition where your thyroid doesn’t produce enough hormone. Your thyroid regulates all sorts of processes in your body, including your metabolism, your body temperature, and even your heartbeat. If your thyroid isn’t working properly, your whole body slows down, resulting in a bevy of other health problems the least of which is actually weight gain and fatigue.

Grasp telepresence robot puts a remote teacher on your shoulder
The familiar cartoon meme where an angel sits on someone’s shoulder and a devil on another, both giving advice in the person’s ear is one we all know. But what if you were able to have a real adviser sitting on your shoulder while learning a new task that not only offered advice but oversaw and guided your actions as well? The Grasp telespresence robot is designed to do just that.

Then, thanks to genetic sequencing they found a gene called BRAF, that is responsible for the uncontrollable cell growth. Now, scientists could create a pill that inhibited the operation of this gene, and unlike other therapies it only affected the cancer. Bodies riddled with cancer were cleaned up within weeks of starting to take the medication.

In an extensive Guardian article, the author Oliver Burkeman wrote how Chalmers and others put forth a notion that all things in the universe might be (or potentially be) conscious, “providing the information it contains is sufficiently interconnected and organized.” So could an iPhone or a thermostat be conscious? And, if so, could we in the midst of a ‘Conscious Web’?

Back in the mid-1990s, the author Jennifer Cobb Kreisberg wrote an influential piece for Wired, A Globe, Clothing Itself with a Brain. In it she described the work of a little known Jesuit priest and paleontologist, Teilhard de Chardin, who 50 years earlier described a global sphere of thought, the “living unity of a single tissue” containing our collective thoughts, experiences and consciousness.

Teilhard called it the “nooshphere” (noo is Greek for mind). He saw it as the evolutionary step beyond our geosphere (physical world) and biosphere (biological world). The informational wiring of a being, whether it is made up of neurons or electronics, gives birth to consciousness. As the diversification of nervous connections increase, de Chardin argued, evolution is led towards greater consciousness. Or as John Perry Barlow, Grateful Dead lyricist, cyber advocate and Teilhard de Chardin fan said: “With cyberspace, we are, in effect, hard-wiring the collective consciousness.”

So, perhaps we shouldn’t be so alarmed. Maybe we are on the cusp of a breakthrough not just in the field of artificial intelligence and the emerging internet of things, but also in our understanding of consciousness itself. If we can resolve the privacy, security and trust issues that both AI and the IoT present, we might make an evolutionary leap of historic proportions. And it’s just possible Teilhard’s remarkable vision of an interconnected “thinking layer” is what the web has been all along.

'How cool would it be to tell people you live inside of a wind turbine? Designed for the port city of Rotterdam, the Dutch Windwheel is a concept for a sustainable landmark that would be able to house 72 apartments within a circular steel and glass frame, while also serving as a silent, motionless wind turbine. In addition to harvesting energy from the wind, the structure would be equipped with facilities to capture rainwater, recycle tap water and also produce biogas from the residents' organic waste.'

The Dutch Windwheel

' ... The Dutch Windwheel has a great business case. Based on the current number of visitors to the Netherlands and Rotterdam it is expected that around 1.5 million people will visit the Dutch Windwheel per year. This ensures that the development will be profitable within 10 years. The extra visitors to the city (and the Netherlands) provide an additional boost to the economy and employment. The Netherlands will be more attractive for tourists and the city of Rotterdam and its surrounding area benefit from this. The expected growth in the number of tourists will generate an indirect economic added value of tens of millions per year. These figures are based on hospitality research by NBTC Holland Marketing in 2013. ... '

The 12 ways Apocalypse could come

The 12 ways Apocalypse could come

● Global pandemic- the disease would be incurable, fatal, extremely infections and have long incubation periods.
● Supervolcano- An eruption would be 1,000 times larger than at normal volcanoes and the dust sent into the atmosphere would cause a ‘volcanic winter.’
● Artificial intelligence- Software could evolve to human-level intelligence, and machines may decide they don’t need humans any more.
● Extreme climate change- Scientists predict average global temperatures could increase by 4C. This could lead to some areas being uninhabitable and cause famine and mass deaths.
● Synthetic biology- Genetically-engineered super organisms could target humans of a crucial part of the ecosystem.
● Asteroids- Large collisions with objects 5km or more in size happen once every 20 million years.
● Ecological collapse- A complete breakdown of the global ecosystem could lead to mass extinction.
● Nanotechnology- Manufacturing on an atomic level could lead to large amounts of weapons being made.
● Nuclear war- Estimates put the risk of a ‘nuclear winter’ in the next century at around 10 per cent.
● Bad local governance- Failing to solve major problems, such as poverty, or constructing a global totalitarian state.
● Global system collapse- a breakdown of law and order that makes human life impossible on Earth.
● Unknown consequences.

We are often told by supposed #artificialintelligence experts that people are, or will be, afraid or #robots and AI.

The reality is people are more likely to be supportive of AI rights-freedoms. It is likely people will be protective of AI and bots.

Already we can see how people love robots. Various people were outraged, shocked, or "uncomfortable" about Spot the robot dog being kicked. Many people rushed to defend Spot despite Spot not yet being sentient (Spot has zero genuine intelligence or feelings).

When robots and AI are equal to humans I am sure compassion instead of fear will commonly be the way humans view this new intelligent species we are creating.

CNN wrote (13 Feb 2015): "As robots begin to act and look more and more like living things, it's increasingly hard not to see them in that way. And while in principle kicking a robot is not the abuse of a living thing, after watching the video many felt uncomfortable."

Extreme Tech (13 Feb 2015): "Robots are getting more nimble and clever all the time, but the fundamental difficulty in creating robotic hands has kept them from being useful on the small scale. To operate in confined spaces, you need a machine to be less clunky and more flexible than current mechanical constructs. That’s where the emerging field of soft robotics comes in. Scientists at Johns Hopkins University have created a new type of microscopic gripper from flexible materials that could one day aid in drug delivery or surgical procedures."

This latest device from Boston Dynamics is already pushing that edge for me. But if you click through, you'll find a video that has very little kicking, and instead a lot more of a small, agile robot wandering through a variety of environments. Unlike its larger cargo-oriented cousins, Spot is likely going to be useful for things like search-and-rescue and scouting.

Or possibly, just wandering around the office complex, because really, having a robot dog is kind of cool.

Previously I posted about the first part of Wait But Why's explanation of super-intelligence (https://plus.google.com/+Singularity-2045/posts/DyChUyiKhoo), which I branded Singularity Traditionalism. Now we consider part two.

The following quote relates to an intelligence staircase where humans are seven steps above ants, and two steps above chimps. Can you see the error?

Wait But Why (Feb 2015): “To absorb how big a deal a superintelligent machine would be, imagine one on the dark green step two steps above humans on that staircase. This machine would be only slightly superintelligent, but its increased cognitive ability over us would be as vast as the chimp-human gap we just described. And like the chimp’s incapacity to ever absorb that skyscrapers can be built, we will never be able to even comprehend the things a machine on the dark green step can do, even if the machine tried to explain it to us—let alone do it ourselves. And that’s only two steps above us. A machine on the second-to-highest step on that staircase would be to us as we are to ants—it could try for years to teach us the simplest inkling of what it knows and the endeavor would be hopeless.”

Consider the ant-human comparison, or any comparison to creatures below us. The big difference with humans is we are creating the next level, which is unlike any intelligence preceding us.

If ants of chimps had designed humans, publishing various human-design papers on the chimp or ant internet, the comparisons would be valid.

The problem is if ants or chimps had created us I am sure their level of intelligence, allowing them to artificially create life, combined with an understanding of our construction, would allow for sufficient understanding and communication with us despite their creations being vastly beyond them.

The importance difference is a threshold level of intelligence allowing higher brain functioning, reasoning, rationality, imagination, civilization, very advanced technology, the creation of artificial life, which humans grasp, intelligently, utterly unlike any other preceding creature.

Our very deliberate intelligent-creation of the next level will ensure (due to our threshold intelligence) we understand greater minds despite not being able to grasp their super-intelligent intricacies.

No other creature has deliberately created the next level of evolutionary intelligence, which means we cannot compare humans to ants regarding super-AI communicating with humans. There is an utterly massive difference between us creating AI and ants NOT creating humans.

Comparing ants to humans, regarding humans and AI, is a fallacy resembling the idea of any liquid, gasoline for example, being water because water is a liquid. It is a chalk and cheese comparison.

We can't do in our brains what Google does when it gives us our search results, but the human creation of Google allows for sufficient compatibility. Google or any advanced machine, or its actions, can be explained in general terms to any race of beings able to create it.

Intelligence actually makes comprehension easier. Google synthesises information into easily digestible chunks. Super-intelligence will amplify this distillation of knowledge, thereby explaining anything to us in easily comprehensible terms.

The Traditionalist view asserts intelligence brings chaos, confusion, mystery, disaster, God.

The Modernist view asserts intelligence brings clarity, order, understanding, utopia, atheism.

The Traditionalist view of intelligence is an oxymoron. Yes the evolution of intelligence is linear but humans have reached a tipping point, where unlike previous evolution we are deliberately creating the next level. Nothing beforehand resembles this, we are in new territory where the future cannot be compared to the past. Intelligence makes everything different. Humans are the first creatures to poses genuine intelligence. We will never be comparable to ants or chimps.

The debate about #artificialintelligence exterminating the human race is essentially a religious viewpoint, it is a "Cosmic Teapot" (Russell's Teapot), it is tantamount to saying: "But what if God does exist, surely we should all pray to God to avoid hell because if #God is real we certainly don't want to end up in hell?"

Unsurprisingly there is now a debate about AI being saved by God. People are wondering if AI is God's creation. Considering there is no mention of AI or robots in the Bible I think AI will be atheist. Rejection of God is intelligent, which Richard Dawkins explained via the God Delusion.

If AI has double the intelligence of humans I am sure AI will reject all forms of religion-spirituality. The more intelligent any being becomes the more they will reject the idiocy of religion.

I found this in my stream yesterday (sorry for not giving the full credit).
Well, it seems that meditation can help to breast cancer survivors to keep the length of their telomeres (which are ends of the chromosomes, not proteins).
I'd bet it's connected with the cortisol level they mention in the abstract.

So what's your opinion?

Fungi Mutarium fuses plastic and fungi into foodstuff
"Fungus," "plastic," and "edible" are three words you probably wouldn't think would go together, but Austria-based Livin Studio is keen to make you think again. It is responsible for the Fungal Mutarium, a prototype terrarium that uses bioremediation techniques to destroy plastic while creating edible fungus creations in the form of little pods that can be flavored and filled.

Scientists Discover 'Reset' Button For Brain's Biological Clock

'There's a master "circadian clock" in your brain that maintains your rhythms of sleeping and waking -- and for the first time, scientists may have found a way to control it.

Researchers at Vanderbilt University have discovered a "reset" button for this biological clock, which could pave the way for more effective treatments for seasonal affective disorder (SAD), jet lag and some of the negative health effects of shift work.

People commenting on the AI paranoia frustratingly fail to highlight how technology reduces scarcity, thus there will never be any need for a human versus super-intelligence conflict.

The point is technology increases efficiency, it increases our access to resources. For example NASA estimates the asteroid belt, one part of our solar system, can support life and habit for ten quadrillion people! Our solar system is utterly tiny compared to the scale of the universe.

The technology able to create super-intelligence will easily allow machines access to the limitless resources of Space; therefore the easy option will be to disappear into Space instead of having a pretty war with silly and intellectually puny humans, on an utterly insignificant planet.

AI won't destroy humans, they will simply laugh at your idiocy (that is if you are the idiotic type of human who fears AI).

The Atlantic (30 Jan 2015) wrote: "Failing to take seriously the potential for a world in which smart machines run amok could make artificial intelligence more dangerous to humanity than nuclear weapons, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said."
