● Artificial intelligence- Software could evolve to human-level intelligence, and machines may decide they don’t need humans any more.
● Extreme climate change- Scientists predict average global temperatures could increase by 4C. This could lead to some areas being uninhabitable and cause famine and mass deaths.
● Synthetic biology- Genetically-engineered super organisms could target humans of a crucial part of the ecosystem.
● Asteroids- Large collisions with objects 5km or more in size happen once every 20 million years.
● Ecological collapse- A complete breakdown of the global ecosystem could lead to mass extinction.
● Nanotechnology- Manufacturing on an atomic level could lead to large amounts of weapons being made.
● Nuclear war- Estimates put the risk of a ‘nuclear winter’ in the next century at around 10 per cent.
● Bad local governance- Failing to solve major problems, such as poverty, or constructing a global totalitarian state.
