Can You Program Ethics Into a Self-Driving Car?

Can You Program Ethics Into a Self-Driving Car?

When self-driving cars kill, it’s the code (and the coders) that will be put on trial

All driving involves risk, and deciding how to distribute that risk among drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and even property has an ethical component. For both engineers and the general public, it’s important that a car’s decision-making system weigh the ethical implications of its actions.

I think when robots become self-aware they should definitely have rights.

We are often told by supposed #artificialintelligence experts that people are, or will be, afraid or #robots and AI.

The reality is people are more likely to be supportive of AI rights-freedoms. It is likely people will be protective of AI and bots.

Already we can see how people love robots. Various people were outraged, shocked, or "uncomfortable" about Spot the robot dog being kicked. Many people rushed to defend Spot despite Spot not yet being sentient (Spot has zero genuine intelligence or feelings).

When robots and AI are equal to humans I am sure compassion instead of fear will commonly be the way humans view this new intelligent species we are creating.

CNN wrote (13 Feb 2015): "As robots begin to act and look more and more like living things, it's increasingly hard not to see them in that way. And while in principle kicking a robot is not the abuse of a living thing, after watching the video many felt uncomfortable."

At what point does a robot start to seem alive enough that kicking it -- even just to test its stability controls -- seems wrong? This latest device from Boston Dynamics is already pushing that edge for me. But if you click through, you'll find a video that has very little kicking, and instead a lot more of a small, agile robot wandering through a variety of environments. Unlike its larger cargo-oriented cousins, Spot is likely going to be useful for things like search-and-rescue and scouting.

Or possibly, just wandering around the office complex, because really, having a robot dog is kind of cool.
