Although the mere thought of a swarm of microrobots burrowing into an eyeball is enough to make some people squirm, scientists believe tiny, controllable delivery vehicles could be the future of eye medicine. Now, researchers have developed a tiny, rotini-shaped spiral that could one day be deployed in the thousands for targeted drug delivery.

What I believe too.

What I believe too.

“Our vision is that, in the future, robots will no longer be designed and built for a particular task. Instead, we will design composable robotic units that give robots the flexibility to autonomously adapt their capabilities, shape and size to changing task requirements.”

The Transwheel Drone is a great idea! According to the Daily Mail:

Transwheel drones use a single self-balancing wheel and a robotic arm to pick up and carry packages;
The electric robots would work alone for small deliveries or operate together as a swarm to carry larger loads;
They would use GPS to help them navigate and facial recognition to confirm the identity of a recipient; and
Designers say the robots could allow customers to receive deliveries at times that are convenient to them.

Swarming Nanomedicine | Sabine Hauert | TEDxWarwick

Dr. Sabine Hauert is a Swarm Engineer at the University of Bristol and Bristol Robotics Laboratory, where she designs swarms of nanobots for biomedical applications.

Swarm strategies are either inspired from nature or are automatically designed using machine learning and crowdsourcing. Sabine has designed swarms of nanoparticles for cancer treatment at MIT and deployed large aerial swarms for use as communication relays at EPFL. Her work has been featured in mainstream media including The Economist, CNN, and New Scientist.

Sabine is passionate about science communication and, as well as having produced award-winning videos viewed over 250,000 times, is the Co-founder and President of Robohub, a non-profit dedicated to connecting the robotics community to the rest of the world - Robohub already features over 1000 blog posts and 1.5 million podcast downloads!

World's Largest Swarm of Miniature Robot Submarines

World's Largest Swarm of Miniature Robot Submarines

I have first heard of CoCoRo during AWASS2013, I was in the workshop that developed one swarm strategy for the simulated robots to perform their task. I have learned NetLogo for it, quite an interesting and exciting experience.

Forty one tiny robot submarines is a lot of tiny robot submarines. It’s so many, in fact, that controlling them individually doesn’t make sense, and the only way to go is to give them levels of swarm intelligence, so that each individual robot can take care of itself while the swarm as a whole completes an objective.

The CoCoRo (Collective Cognitive Robotics) Project, sponsored by the European Commission, has been working with a heterogeneous swarm of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) since 2011
