10 Brain-Boosting Foods That Just Might Make You Smarter (You’re Gonna Love No. 6) http://rgn.bz/lXgS

We have all heard the phrase, “you are what you eat,” but did you know you that what you eat can make you smarter?

In addition to helping your body stay healthy and strong, certain foods can help your brain work better and even protect against mental disorders.

“Food is like a pharmaceutical compound that affects the brain,” said Fernando Gómez-Pinilla, a UCLA professor of neurosurgery and physiological science who has researched the effects of food on the brain. “Diet, exercise and sleep have the potential to alter our brain health and mental function. This raises the exciting possibility that changes in diet are a viable strategy for enhancing cognitive abilities, protecting the brain from damage and counteracting the effects of aging.”

The food we eat can affect everything from our mood to our memory. Nutrient-dense whole foods can do more than just fuel our bodies; they can help us think more clearly.

Scientists Discover a Woman Whose Eyes Have a Whole New Type of Colour Receptor – She Can See What We Can’t...

Scientists Discover a Woman Whose Eyes Have a Whole New Type of Colour Receptor – She Can See What We Can’t http://rgn.bz/8W2r

Do you see green the same way that I see green? Every now and then, we find ourselves wondering such questions, as we have all come to know and agree on the use of generic colour names like blue, yellow, green, and so on to distinguish and analyze life around us. Surely, we are all unique in the way we view colours to a degree, but at the end of the day, green is green, and so we leave it at that. But not everyone is quite like this.

After searching for more than 25 years, neuroscientists in the UK have come across a woman who has an extra type of cone cell — the receptor cells that detect colour — in her eyes. This means she can see a whopping 99 million more colours than the rest of us, and belongs to a very small group of people with super-vision called “tetrachromats.”

The majority of humans, referred to as “trichromats,” have three types of cone cells in their eyes, with each one thought to be able to distinguish around 100 shades. Together, our three cone cells can distinguish roughly 1 million different colours. Those who are colour blind, however, only have two functioning types of cone cells.

And then there’s the doctor in northern England who researchers found two years ago. Identified as cDa29, she has four cone cell types, which means she may be able to distinguish up to 100 million colours that many of us could only fantasize about.

So how do you get a fourth type of cone cell? The idea was first proposed in 1948, when Dutch scientist HL de Vries discovered something interesting about the eyes of colour blind people. He noticed that colour blind men only possessed two normal cone cells and one mutant cone that’s less sensitive to either green or red light, while the mothers and daughters of said men possessed one mutant cone and three normal cones. This means they had four types of cone cells, one of which wasn’t working like the rest.

A Map Of Where The Internet Doesn't Exist--And How To Get There | Co.Design | business + design

'Dutch designer Richard Vijgen has long been fascinated by the unseen structure of the Internet. His last app, Architecture of Sound, let people discover the Wi-Fi signals, overhead satellites, GPS units, and other radio waves that surround them.

His new app, though, goes in the other direction. Called White Spots, it's like a compass for finding the end of the Internet. And it may be a lot closer than you think.'

White Spots

'The White Spots App

Do you ever desire to escape from the information flows surrounding us?
The White Spots App visualizes the invisible electromagnetic cloud that we live in and offers a way out.
Use the App with Google cardboard to travel from the online to the offline world in Virtual Reality, or use the White Spots world map to travel to places off the grid near you.

In VR mode, the network scanner shows the invisible digital signals around you in real time and takes you on a journey to the end of the Internet in immersive 360° stories.

In Map mode, the White Spots world map shows the global divide between the connected and unconnected worlds. Browse the map to explore video stories about life off the grid or use the route planner to venture into uncharted territory yourself. The route planner finds a route to a White Spot near you and invites you to add new stories to the map.'

We can’t all be botanists, unfortunately, but most of us do have smartphones, and that may be a start. A computer vision system built by Microsoft Research Asia can identify thousands of species of flowers with nothing but a picture. The Smart Flower Recognition System (Microsoft always did have a way with branding) began serendipitously, with the chance meeting of MSRA’s Yong Rui and botanists from the Chinese Academy of Science at a seminar. Rui’s image analysis work was a perfect match for the botanists, who were trying to figure out how to sort through millions of publicly submitted images of local flowers. The system is built on – what else? – machine learning, specifically a Caffe convolutional neural network trained in 800,000 flower images. Different species of flowers are differentiated enough that, like faces, they can be told apart by running them through a series of filters made to highlight certain features.

Google wants to improve artificial intelligence to prevent robot screw-ups - Recode

Google wants to improve artificial intelligence to prevent robot screw-ups - Recode

'... Here are the five issues that Google flags:

- Whoops: If you train a robot to clean your house as quickly as possible, how do you ensure that it doesn’t knock over the lamp?

- “Reward hacking”: What if the robots cheat? Google wonders aloud if a robot could, say, sweep a mess under a rug or disable its vision (nothing to see here!).

- Reasonable human feedback: Can robots figure out how to improvise on the job — like toss a candy wrapper, but not a cellphone — without constant human oversight?

- Physical safety: We probably don’t want our robots shoving wet mops in sockets.

- Different environments: Once the robot learns to clean a room in a house, can the same robot clean an office?

It’s important research — before these types of robots arrive en masse, they will surely need to pass certain safety requirements. And Google needs to prove that AI is a force for good. The Google paper also nods to other important research topics like ensuring that AI doesn’t fall into “malicious” hands or “attack or harm people.”

"Chinese botanists use Microsoft machine intelligence to aid in flower recognition project." "Nearly 2.6 million images were quickly submitted to data storage without any filtration to speak of. Jianlong Fu provided a solution through trial and error, building tools that filtered out bad images and discerned the intricacies of each species of flowers." (Jianlong Fu heads the project at the Institute of Botany at the Chinese Academy of Sciences). "The Smart Flower Recognition System was then integrated with a 20-layer neural network, sifting through the thousands of images submitted. With nearly 800,000 pictures, the engine accurately identified more than 90% of flowers. The achievement is close to the success rate of human botanists."

Could a Wind Turbine Be Coming to a Bridge Near You? | Innovation | Smithsonian

'... a team of Spanish and British engineers has released data that could make locating turbine sites a bit easier. The big thinkers suggest building turbines into the underside of already existing bridges.

The engineers studied the Juncal Viaduct, a car bridge on the Spanish island of Gran Canaria. They created computer models and determined how much wind energy the bridge could produce if equipped with turbines. Running different configurations of turbine numbers and sizes, the model suggested two medium-sized turbines would be the best solution for most bridges. The largest wind turbines currently on the market have blades of about 260 feet across.

For the Juncal Viaduct model, two turbines would produce about 0.5 megawatts of wind power. This could cover the energy consumption of about 500 homes and save 140 tons of carbon dioxide per year, which equates to the amount produced by 7,200 trees in that time.

Artificial Intelligence Is Setting Up the Internet for a Huge Clash With Europe

Artificial Intelligence Is Setting Up the Internet for a Huge Clash With Europe

The regulations prohibit any automated decision that “significantly affects” EU citizens. This includes techniques that evaluate a person’s “performance at work, economic situation, health, personal preferences, interests, reliability, behavior, location, or movements.” At the same time, the legislation provides what Goodman calls a “right to explanation.” In other words, the rules give EU citizens the option of reviewing how a particular service made a particular algorithmic decision. Both of these stipulations could strike at the heart of major Internet services. At Facebook, for example, machine learning systems are already driving ad targeting, and these depend on so much personal data. What’s more, machine learning doesn’t exactly lend itself to that “right of explanation.” Explaining what goes on inside a neural network is a complicated task even for the experts. These systems operate by analyzing millions of pieces of data, and though they work quite well, it’s difficult to determine exactly why they work so well. You can’t easily trace their precise path to a final answer.

Eating more fruit and vegetables can substantially increase happiness levels

'University of Warwick research indicates that eating more fruit and vegetables can substantially increase people's later happiness levels.

To be published shortly in the prestigious American Journal of Public Health, the study is one of the first major scientific attempts to explore psychological well-being beyond the traditional finding that fruit and vegetables can reduce risk of cancer and heart attacks.

Happiness benefits were detected for each extra daily portion of fruit and vegetables up to 8 portions per day.

The researchers concluded that people who changed from almost no fruit and veg to eight portions of fruit and veg a day would experience an increase in life satisfaction equivalent to moving from unemployment to employment. The well-being improvements occurred within 24 months.'

'A NEWLY developed drug for cancer has the potential to kill superbugs and also beat deadly viruses such as HIV and ebola, it has been revealed.

The breakthrough cancer therapy could be a “universal” therapy against flu and has the ability to destroy bacteria which has been failed by traditional medicines.

Scientists behind the discovery say that the drug works by hurting the engine of viruses and cancers in cells while not affecting the rest of the body.

The drug, known as AR-12, is now being brought to the UK by a pharmaceutical company for clinical trials against HIV.

AR-12 also has the backing of the US army who plan to incorporate it in a project that will see the drug used as a last resort against against viruses such as ebola.'
