The Bank of Russia has partnered with Yandex to use machine learning to find websites belonging to unlicensed money lenders. "The system works by analysing key words across an existing Yandex database, which identified seven million web pages related to finance topics. The algorithm is then able to assign a web page to its correct category, before identifying if an organisation is licenced, which Yandex says occurred correctly in 98 percent of cases."

LOL, looking forward to the day when everyone starts considering the possibility of everything being free, via easy access to limitless resources. #Basicincome #UBI will ensure a smooth transition. UBI is mentioned in the following article.

Zoltan Istvan writing in Tech Crunch (29 March 2016):  "If 90 percent of human jobs are replaced by robots in the next 50 years — something now considered plausible — is capitalism still the ideal economic system to champion? No one is certain about the answer, but the question is making everyone nervous — and forcing people to dig deep inside themselves to discover the kind of future they want."

"Whichever system we choose will have to incorporate an improving standard of life for people and society. For this reason, I tend to support a Universal Basic Income as one way to desire robots to take our jobs but not leave the world poor. However, that doesn’t really say what will happen to economies after the robot revolution is really underway."

Zoltan seems to touch upon the idea of everything being free in the following quote: "In fact, I doubt money will even survive this century. If anything, in the future, only knowledge will have tradable value — the knowledge to create better machines, software and experiences from technology." http://techcrunch.com/2016/03/29/will-capitalism-survive-the-robot-revolution/

Scientists resurrect an abandoned drug, find it effective against human viruses

'Viruses have proven to be wily foes. Attempts to fend off viruses causing even the common cold or flu have failed, and new viral outbreaks such as dengue, Ebola or Zika continue to elude drugs.

Given these challenges, a group at Stanford is tackling the problem from a different angle: boosting the human body's ability to resist the virus rather than taking on the virus directly. This approach has paid off with a drug that, in cells in a lab dish at least, helps fight two disease-causing viruses and potentially many more. The work was published March 28, 2016 in Nature Chemical Biology.'

The Rise of VPUs: Giving eyes to machines. "Movidius is a small chip startup that you've most probably not heard of, yet. It's a European company that currently produces specialised chips known as Vision Processing Units (VPUs). The chips are meant for application in areas like Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality and others. Movidius' Myriad 2 chip is running on the recently-announced DJI Phantom 4 drone, and its Myriad 1 chip was used in Google's first Project Tango device. Dashwood explains that while Movidius is a decade-old company, it turned its attention to VPUs in 2009, with Google's first Project Tango phone being the first instance of its chips being implemented. The Myriad 1 and Myriad 2 are high-performance, low-power chips, meant specifically for Computer Vision."

Should we be worried?

Originally shared by Lacerant Plainer

Should we be worried? : Artificial Intelligence (AI) is round the corner and some of the brightest and most 'in the know' people are worried. Should we be? You decide. Is it time for us to make sure AIs follow Isaac Asimov's three laws?

Google Deepmind : DeepMind's AlphaGo artificial intelligence has won the final match of the Go series against world champion Lee Sedol. The AlphaGo AI, which aims to mimic how a human brain learns, effectively defeated humans at Go by a process of trial and error.

It combines advanced search techniques with neural networking, allowing it to both think creatively and take advantage of huge amounts of data about previously played games of Go. Using 12 layers of neural networks, it selects its next move using just one element of its system while the others predict how the rest of the game will play out. Predicting the future in this way, it adjusts its strategy and moves gradually towards victory.

Movers and Shakers : In a poignant interview given in 2014, Elon Musk likened AI to “summoning the demon.” Stephen Hawking warned that it might “spell the end of the human race.”  Other notable individuals have also come out against AI. Bill Gates recently stated, “I agree with Elon Musk and some others on this and don’t understand why some people are not concerned.” So why aren’t more people concerned? Surely, if left unchecked, AI will pose an existential threat to the entire human race.

In a riveting discussion between arguably two of the world’s  most intelligent people, Neil Degrasse Tyson and Ray Kurzweil, some important points were made on the future of technology. Ray Kurzweil, a computer engineer, celebrated author, and known futurist points out that by “2029 computers would have all of the intellectual and emotional capabilities of humans.”

"How corporations will use artificial empathy to sell us more shit." "The research being done by Shasha Lu, a lecturer in marketing at the Cambridge Judge Business School, seeks to combine machine-based image and video analysis with current marketing techniques in order to streamline product sales. The idea is essentially to teach a machine to read a customer’s behavioral cues in reaction to a particular product and then make targeted product recommendations based on these social signals. In Lu’s case, she is specifically focusing on teaching a machine how to give clothing recommendations tailored (ha!) to the individual consumer."

"According to Lu, the project is based on techniques used by human salespeople."

tDCS, or transcranial direct current stimulation. Developed with the intent to treat a range of neuropsychiatric conditions, it applies a constant current to the surface of the scalp, priming neurons to fire more easily and produce a stronger, more synchronous signal. Because it doesn’t actually cause neurons to activate, tDCS is considered one of the safest types of non-invasive brain stimulation. It also has a relatively simple setup, and can be self-administered outside of the hospital setting.

A Chinese “mosquito factory” releases 20 million of the little buggers into the wild every week

A team of scientists, led by Xi Zhiyong of China’s Sun Yat-sen University and Michigan State University, announced Monday (Mar. 14) that they are breeding mosquitoes that are infected with Wolbachia bacteria, which produces infertile eggs when they mate with females in the wild. Because the transmission of dengue and Zika is carried by mosquitos, the release of these laboratory insects could stop the diseases from becoming epidemics, the research team explains (link in Chinese). The world’s biggest “mosquito factory,” with a total area of 3,500 square meters (38,000 sq ft), and four workshops that each can breed 5 million mosquitoes a week, has been established in southern China’s Guangzhou city, where dengue fever strikes annually.

Dramatic remissions in blood cancer in immunotherapy treatment trial

Recent advances in an immune-cell cancer treatment — a type of immunotherapy using engineered immune cells to target specific molecules on cancer cells — are producing dramatic results for people with cancer, according to Stanley Riddell, MD, an immunotherapy researcher and oncologist at Seattle’s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Riddell and his colleagues have refined new methods of engineering a patient’s own immune cells to better target and kill cancer cells while decreasing side effects. In laboratory and clinical trials, the researchers are seeing “dramatic responses” in patients with tumors that are resistant to conventional high-dose chemotherapy, “providing new hope for patients with many different kinds of malignancies,” Riddell said.

Driverless Bus System Showcases Future of Public Transit - this May, not some distant future

As technology companies and automakers race to put a driverless car on the road, they might want to take a look at a small experiment being conducted in the Netherlands. WEpods, an abbreviation of Wageningen and Ede, two towns in the south-central province of Gelderland, will soon play host to a driverless bus system, ferrying dignitaries and visitors to a local university via six-passenger vehicles that look a bit like enclosed, oversized golf carts. Unlike similar autonomous transport systems currently in use, such as the Rotterdam Rivium bus or Heathrow airport shuttles, these electrically powered vehicles won’t run on dedicated tracks, instead rolling on the same roadways used by human drivers.

While a growing body of research explores the impact of normative and environmental extrinsic factors on food consumption quantity, less attention is given to the intrinsic cues, or sensory properties, of the food being consumed. Our research contributes to this growing literature by examining the effect of food sound salience (i.e., the sound that a food makes during mastication) on consumption quantity. Specifically, we show that increased attention to the sound the food makes, or food sound salience, may serve as a consumption monitoring cue leading to reduced consumption. Across three studies, we show a consistent negative relationship between the salience of a food’s sound and food intake. Our research highlights the importance of intrinsic auditory food cues on consumption. Our findings are valuable to both researchers interested in understanding how sensory cues are connected to consumption and marketers utilizing sound in their communications to consumers.

This includes 23 chromosome from the mother and 23 from the father
Egg and sperm cells are haploid as they contain one set of chromosomes
The breakthrough will help study genetic abnormalities, treat blindness and diabetes and help with infertility'

This drug is closest yet to a universal snakebite antidote

'Snakes, says Dr. Matt Lewin, are “like little mobile landmines”: They’re invisible, lying in wait in populated areas, killing or maiming without warning. Worldwide, tens of thousands of people die from snakebites every year.

But an existing drug could change that. Lewin, an emergency medical doctor, presented findings Friday that a compound called varespladib can counteract the effects of 28 common venoms in biochemical models — making it the closest thing yet to a universal antidote.

[...]

“The results I have seen are very interesting and promising,” said José María Gutiérrez of the University of Costa Rica, who has been researching snake venom and treatments for 40 years and has seen Lewin’s results. But, he noted, it’s not quite time to make the giant leap toward human trials. He believes the work should progress with further animal studies. “The rationale of this approach is sound and should be pursued by researchers at the experimental and clinical levels,” he said.

'A new wall-climbing drone can approach any type of structure by flying and sticking to the target and utitlizing a pose change and perching mechanism.

The integrity of large structures like bridges, high-rise buildings, wind turbines, and large aircrafts is deeply related with security. Today, due to the aging of large structures and the potential concerns about their collapse, interest in structural health monitoring has risen all over the world. Though there has been a great deal of research on the inspection of inaccessible large structures using mobile robots, since most existing robots require the installation of additional infrastructure or use magnetic-based technology or vacuum adhesion, it is difficult to apply those technologies to structures with diverse surface shapes and materials.'

DeepMind founder Demis Hassabis on how AI will shape the future

What I’m really excited to use this kind of AI for is science, and advancing that faster. I’d like to see AI-assisted science where you have effectively AI research assistants that do a lot of the drudgery work and surface interesting articles, find structure in vast amounts of data, and then surface that to the human experts and scientists who can make quicker breakthroughs. I was giving a talk at CERN a few months ago; obviously they create more data than pretty much anyone on the planet, and for all we know there could be new particles sitting on their massive hard drives somewhere and no-one’s got around to analyzing that because there’s just so much data. So I think it’d be cool if one day an AI was involved in finding a new particle.

European Psychology Lab Working Toward Matrix-Level VR Immersion via neurohaptics

Two researchers in Estonia are figuring out ways to trick your brain that are effective enough to elicit physical responses, and push the sensations of virtual reality immersion way beyond anything that’s been experienced so far. If you’ve ever put on a VR headset then chances are you have experienced the sensations that Madis Vasser and Peeter Nieler are working to accelerate and perfect. The two met during an Estonian VR meetup and began exploring the best way to spend their time and resources so they would have the greatest positive impact on the burgeoning VR/AR industry. I talked with them over Skype and learned about their efforts, which can be summed up in one word: Neurohaptics.

Scientists identify a virus and two bacteria that could be causing Alzheimer's - ScienceAlert

'... This isn't the first time scientists have suspected that viruses or bacteria could play a role in causing Alzheimer's - previous studies have shown that people with Alzheimer's tend to be more likely to be infected with certain microbes, including types of fungus, than the rest of the population.

But attempts to nail down those links have failed, so right now, the leading hypothesis is that Alzheimer's is caused by the build-up of sticky amyloid plaques and mis-folded tau proteins in the brain, which break down communication between neurons and lead to memory loss, cognitive decline, and eventually death.

Now the editorial claims it's time to consider the idea that certain viruses or bacteria are triggering this plaque build-up in the first place, and investigate whether antimicrobial drugs could help stop it. They say that the first microbes we should investigate are the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1), the chlamydia bacteria, and a type of spiral-shaped bacteria called spirochaetes.

“Migraines with aura linked to higher risk of stroke” http://rgn.bz/Vn3s

Migraine sufferers who experience auras and female migraine sufferers taking estrogen are at a greater risk for stroke. The results of the study found that migraine sufferers with auras are at a 2.4 times greater risk for stroke from a blood clot, compared to migraine sufferers without auras.

Furthermore, migraine women sufferers who take estrogen have a 30 percent greater risk for blood clot-based stroke, compared to women not taking estrogen. Together, these two risk factors present a dangerous combination for some women with regards to their risk of stroke.

Dr. Elizabeth Loder, chief of the headache and pain division at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, said, “Women who have migraine with aura probably want to think more carefully about the potential risk of stroke associated with using estrogen. I would not go so far as to say they should never use it, but they should think more carefully about it.”

14 separate robots were dedicated to the job of learning grasping in parallel.

Originally shared by Wayne Radinsky

14 separate robots were dedicated to the job of learning grasping in parallel. "While initially the grasps are executed at random and succeed only rarely, each day the latest experiences are used to train a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) to learn to predict the outcome of a grasp, given a camera image and a potential motor command. This CNN is then deployed on the robots the following day, in the inner loop of a servoing mechanism that continually adjusts the robot's motion to maximize the predicted chance of a successful grasp. In essence, the robot is constantly predicting, by observing the motion of its own hand, which kind of subsequent motion will maximize its chances of success. The result is continuous feedback: what we might call hand-eye coordination. Observing the behavior of the robot after over 800,000 grasp attempts, which is equivalent to about 3,000 robot-hours of practice, we can see the beginnings of intelligent reactive behaviors. The robot observes its own gripper and corrects its motions in real time. It also exhibits interesting pre-grasp behaviors, like isolating a single object from a group."

Google is now using these robots to train a deep convolutional neural network (a technique that’s all the rage in machine learning right now) to help its robots predict the outcome of their grasps based on the camera input and motor commands. It’s basically hand-eye coordination for robots. The team says that it took about 3,000 hours of practice (and 800,000 grasp attempts) before it saw “the beginnings of intelligent reactive behaviors.” “The robot observes its own gripper and corrects its motions in real time. It also exhibits interesting pre-grasp behaviors, like isolating a single object from a group,” the team writes. “All of these behaviors emerged naturally from learning, rather than being programmed into the system.”

They called it the Additive Manufacturing Integrated Energy Structure, a mouthful more easily called AMIE 1.0. The unusual design, which was a collaborative effort five years in the making, expresses several intriguing ideas about fabrication methods and energy use. It’s one of the largest carbon fiber structures ever created with a 3-D printer—a method that resulted in very little waste—and shares energy with the SUV, which also was 3-D printed. The project offers a glimpse at how architects think we might live off-the-grid in the future.

Ubuntu and new micro - segmentation!

With upcoming Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, in Ubuntu Core aka "Snappy", on Ubuntu phone, all services now not only run in separated containers (LXD) or virtual machines (KVM), but also automatically get firewalled against each other. Inbound and outbound.

So there is no "intranet", "extranet" any longer. Parts of your inhouse servers then logically belong to other companies, customers or other "Virtual Private Clouds".

All your SQL data has to become segmented, distributed. Thus - many traditional SQL database manufactureres simply are "out of business", have become obsolete.

"Firewall rules creator rulesets" dynamically write and activate firewall rules for you. On demand. Same for network I/O bandwith and file I/O limiters against DoS, Denial of Service attacks.

Note: "Firewall functionality" deeply sticks in Linux kernel, so comes for free. Same for packet inspection. So you can use a "Firewall" everwhere and for free. At no additional license cost!

Unlimited safety without loss of administrative comfort. Juju makes it possible!

The question then to ask is what do the master photographers’ images have in common, and what separates them from the amateur images? While it’s difficult for a computer to answer a philosophical question, if we express the question in mathematical terms we can attempt to solve it computationally. In our case, we aim to find a mathematical space in which the distance between the two images that are aesthetically pleasing is less than the distance between an aesthetically pleasing one and a mediocre one, as Figure 1 shows.

Inside the Artificial Intelligence Revolution: A Special Report

Inside the Artificial Intelligence Revolution: A Special Report

LeCun was a pioneer in deep learning, a kind of machine learning that revolutionized AI. While he was working on his undergraduate degree in 1980, he read about the 1958 "perceptron" and the promise of neural-network algorithms that allow machines to "perceive" things such as images or words. The networks, which mimic the structure of the neural pathways in our brains, are algorithms that use a network of neurons, or "nodes," to perform a weighted statistical analysis of inputs (which can be anything – numbers, sounds, images). Seeing the networks' potential, LeCun wrote his Ph.D. thesis on an approach to training neural networks to automatically "tune" themselves to recognize patterns more accurately – ultimately creating the algorithms that now allow ATMs to read checks. In the years since, refinements in neural networks by other programmers have been the technological underpinning in virtually every advance in smart machines, from computer vision in self-driving cars to speech recognition in Google Voice. It's as if LeCun largely invented the nervous system for artificial life.

Russian autonomous trains arrive in Moscow.

Russian autonomous trains arrive in Moscow. "The 'driver-less train control' software will deploy first in Circle Line, Moscow Metro. The fully autonomous trains will be responsible for everything but opening and closing the doors -- and even then, the software will have something to say about it."

"The system is capable of running trains between stations, stopping with a 3 centimeter margin of error, maintaining safe speed limits, and in turn, reducing driver fatigue and human error. The driver can switch to manual controls whenever needed and operate the doors. The software checks if the train is idle and at the platform for safe loading and unloading."

An electroluminescent 'skin' that stretches to more than six times its original size while still emitting light has been developed. "This hyper-elastic light-emitting capacitor (HLEC), which can endure more than twice the strain of previously tested stretchable displays, consists of layers of transparent hydrogel electrodes sandwiching a dielectric (insulating) elastomer sheet. The elastomer changes luminance and capacitance (the ability to store an electrical charge) when stretched, rolled and otherwise deformed."

Cotton bud in ear: Why can't we resist the temptation despite the warnings? | Features | Lifestyle | The Independent

'... "People have been led to think that it's normal to clean their ears – they think that ear wax is dirty, that it's gross or unnecessary," he said. "But that's not true at all."

Fitzgerald likens ear wax to tears, which help lubricate and protect our eyeballs. Wax, he says, does something similar for the ear canal, where the skin is thin and fragile and highly susceptible to infection. "Your body produces it [ear wax] to protect the ear canal," Fitzgerald says. "What you're taking out is supposed to be in there. There's a natural migration that carries the wax out when left alone."

Even if our ears were meant to be cleaned, the truth is that buds would still be a terrible thing to use, he says. The shape, size, and texture are such that inserting them into your ears tends to push wax inward, toward your ear drum, rather than woo it out.
