Steven Vaughan-Nichols has put together an article covering one option for people that aren't comfortable with Windows 10 on their computer. Linux.
His example choice of Linux Mint is a solid one. I'd also add Debian or OpenSUSE with KDE as good options for Windows XP/7 users to upgrade to.
