Are #robots stealing #jobs or creating jobs? This question is splitting the nation. Just now, at the World Economic Forum in Davos this topic was discussed. This blogpost is definetely worth reading and might give the answer. What is your opinion on that?

  1. Jessica Meyer I think I'll believe it when I see it :)

I think robots will spell the end of paid employment for huge sections of the population. The jobs this article points to generally require fewer people to meet their targets. The idea that all people can simply "skill up" to compete within a far narrower (and ever narrowing) market is a little optimistic to put it mildly. It's not the next four years that we should be concerned about; it's the next 25! And does he expect people to "skill up" every four years for another round of employment "musical chairs"? How do you plan for the future under those circumstances?

And what does all that additional competition do to the wages of those remaining highly skilled jobs, let alone with the glut of people at the bottom scrambling for the dregs?

While it is true that there are some jobs that are harder to automate currently, ongoing shifts in the design of their application environment could change that completely, and possibly over a very short period of time.

The bottom line is that expert systems and robotics can already do away with many human tasks, mechanical and cerebral, and they are improving at an increasing rate. Unless businesses simply invent jobs to give the vast number of people something to do in order to be paid, the future if work isn't bright at all :(

(The author of the article should also note that the Post Office is dying, and email is already getting long in the tooth!)
